December 22, 2009: Karachi, Pakistan – The CIO Pakistan team was invited to the Central Depository’s office to witness the announcement of CDC’s ISO 27001 certification. We had the opportunity to speak with various members of CDC including Mohammad Hanif, CEO Central Depository Company, Syed F. Mazhar, Managing Director, SGS Pakistan Syed Hassan Aslam, CISO of CDC as well as Asif Shah, CIO of CDC.
They took pride in announcing that they had been able to establish a milestone in the history of CDC by being certified. This certification holds a lot of value for the CDC and has their name now listed among the top three companies in Pakistan to receive this certification in the financial sector.
Information Security plays a major role and being the sole custodians of the depository in Pakistan, CDC has a key role to play. Through its efficient operations, it is able to break through the barriers of traditional methods of bookkeeping and manages paperless transactions swiftly and efficiently.
Mohammad Hanif commented that, “The CDC is custodian of more than 70 billion shares and the worth of those shares being 1.7 trillion. Hence it was very important for CDC to show the masses that their assets are in safe hands.”
ISO 27001 certification is a relatively new standard which companies are now aiming for, but CDC took the lead and sought after this certification. It’s an honor for the members of CDC and an unspoken commitment from their end to achieve these global standards. A certification audit will be carried out each year which means in order to sustain the certification they will have to engage in continuous improvement along the lines of information security.

I congratulate the Management of CSD over the achievement of this landmark. Achievement of ISO 27001 Certification signifies the world standards of security being implemented at the CSD.
Askari Bank Ltd also achieved this land mark last year. Such certification can build investor confidence and would attract FDI to our country.
