FAST Students Enter Some Killer Software Apps in PROCOM2010
And there are some more great projects that are being showcased in the Software Competition.
Zohaib Ahmed Khan, Jahangir Hashwani, Syed Mauz Rehan, Shiraz Sheikh, Talha Khan and Tariq Asghar from FAST Karachi, created the ‘Gesture recognition with WII mote!’, which is also their Final Year Project. “We have designed a gesture recognition API in which the user makes gestures and the algorithm recognizes the gesture, using a WII remote,” explains Talha. There are two types of modes: Gesture Recognition Mode and the Real Time Tracking Mode.
A senior researcher at Carnegie Mellon University proposed the idea of using WII remote as a receiver. “It acts as a very sophisticated camera with infrared technology which makes it a much better option than a webcam. What makes the project stand out is the element of human interaction – without having to use any of the objects and equipment provided by Nintendo WII. All that you have to do is move your hands in front of the WII remote capture!”
Another project that 4 students from the final year of FAST in Lahore made was called ‘Guess who?’. The project team members were Hasan Tariq, Muneeb Imtiaz, Ahsan Sajjad and Maaz Azhar from FAST Lahore. ‘Guess Who?’ is a game that offers a natural paradigm to collect expressions in a natural yet controlled way is going to be used to investigate human emotions! “Effective computing is a new field in computing and we are collaborating with Tilburg University Center of Creative Computing to develop our game, which is based on Artificial Intelligence and Human Computer Interaction. It provides such a user-centric interface which is capable of enhancing children interaction with the game, along with Artificial Intelligent agents capable of learning human emotions!”
The Urdu News Miner is a project created by 4 final year students from FAST Karachi – Ahmed Jabir, Muhammad Naveed ur Rehman, Faizan Hussain and Iftikhar Jafrri.
The key features of the project enable News extraction, News categorization, Topic detection, News consolidation and news conflicts, and all in an automated manner! The project extracts and parses news from 5 different urdu news websites, categorizes each news into its specific category, detects HOT topics and breaking news that are either classified as older news or fresh news and consolidates news into summaries of one sentence each. “News conflicts also becomes an interesting space where more than one news on a similar topic are posted across these websites. Our application detects the difference in opinions of two or more news makers on the same hot topic and shows where the differences are, all automated!”
Another project that caught my eye was created by 2nd year students, Syed Ali Raza, Yuneeb Ashraf and Taha Munir from FAST Karachi called ‘Universal Code Analyzer‘. “It’s about detecting plagiarism in coding assignments – We’ve built a complete interface for computer language code analysis, including code file browser, code analysis, plagiarism checker, compiler and grading sheet. The application also generates the report in three popular formats: PDF, HTML and Excel.
Faizan Ashraf, Naushad Qamar and Mohsin Ali Rizvi from FAST Karachi have built an ‘Automated surveillance System’, also their Final Year Project.
The project features include:
-Static vehicle detection
-Cars counter
-Lane violation detector
-Wrong way detection
On the basis of these features, the project detects whenever a car stops at the fast track and captures its video spanning a few seconds. The supervisor in the video control room does not have to look at the whole 24-hour video generated by each camera in the city, but only those clips that are generated by the software, characterized as mishaps.

Will you put up any video coverage of the event?
If the students manage to get any footage, we’ll edit and post it up… But we’re dependent on them for this one..
Can we get the video you recorded while we were elaborating our project?

Hassan – We’ll be posting all the videos up in the Showcase program on the WebStudio… Might take a short while for that to happen since the queue is rather a long one..
Rabia, Thanks for your concern. I’ll be waiting for the upload. It will be great if you somehow notify me through email or update on your website …
Keep up the great work
