NCIA-2010-Sa_05 copyNUST AS IT IS!

When it comes to education par excellence that is not only degree-awarding but also intellectually stimulating, it feels like National University for Sciences and Technology, NUST that rightly claims to be the dynamic face of higher education in Pakistan. As stated in the mission, NUST exists to “Foster University-Industry linkages through commercialization of applied research projects and extending consultancy services for sustained socio-economic development”, and aspires “To emerge as center of excellence for technological and managerial solutions to Industry and Community”, as stated in its vision.

Other than offering undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate degrees across the top 4 disciplinary tiers including Mathematics and Physics, Medicine and Bio-Sciences, Business Studies and Social Studies, and Engineering, IT and Natural Sciences, NUST holds the credit to being the first, and the most recognized university nation-wide for having set-up a Technology Incubation Center (TIC) that puts out technopreneurs. Built on the model of Technology Business Incubators (TBIs) of foreign/international universities/institutes, TIC is but a single example of industry-academia linkages maintained at NUST.

As can be picked from the above-discussed, an initiative at NUST is considered successful when it meets the likes of the academia with respect to engineering solutions, and the industry if those solutions can be marketed well to suit the needs of executives, professionals and various others users of technology. In a pursuit of the same, NUST is preparing for a grand conference in August accompanied by pre-event and post-event workshops, dedicated to Information security. Assurance and Organizational Governance.

Where Mind Meets Matter

Introducing the concept of Information Assurance, the 2-day conference aims to run its course with technical presentations, tutorials, panel discussions and industrial exhibitions. Bridging the gap between the industry and the academia, the conference aims to facilitate knowledge-sharing to create awareness regarding various dimensions of information security, assurance and organizational governance amongst users affiliated with academia, industry, military and/or government. Furthermore, the conference aims to provide an opportunity to the R&D community to discuss recent developments in health care, e-Business, e-Government, financial sector and enterprise, public sector and private sector.

As claimed by the proponents of the conference, the objective is to send back the attendee to its field armed with updated knowledge and skills on conforming to Information Assurance and Organizational Governance. Under the two broad areas of focus, an emphasis will be on improving adaptation to IS technologies, human behavior, defensive and offensive tools etc.

How Minds Shoot and Uproot

At NUST, there is a simple process to it to be followed in the conference as well, as per its vision and mission, which is to emerge as a leader in providing managerial solutions by promoting knowledge-sharing of applied research. At the conference, this will be achieved via a rigorous schedule constituting of various pre/post conference events including certified training workshops on Certified Ethical Hacking (5 day workshop), EC-Council of Certified Security Specialist (2 day workshop), and Security Fundamentals – Fundamentals in Information Security ( 2 day workshop).
